STILLWATER, Okla. – You may see officers in Stillwater pulling over kids, but it’s not what you think.
Officers with the Stillwater Police Department have teamed up with convenience store chain OnCue to stop kids and write them tickets for doing good things.
“When we see kids engaging in good behavior, being safe, helping neighbors, things like that, we want to reinforce that behavior,” said Captain Kyle Gibbs.
Instead of a fine to go along with the tickets, a pat on the back for the kids caught obeying the law by doing things like riding their bikes safely and not forgetting to wear a helmet.
“It gives them the opportunity to get to know the police officers, the opportunity to have a positive interaction with those kids,” Gibbs said.
The citations, are actually coupons good for a tasty treat of their choice from an OnCue store.
Stillwater police hope the program will build the bond between officers and citizens, starting at a young age.
“We’re not the wolves. We are the sheepdogs, and we’re just trying to take care of this community, because it’s our community,” Gibbs said.
The program was started in the summer of 2015 and was so popular with kids that department decided to do it again this year.
